Percussionists take centre stage

Percussion group performs with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra

On Saturday 14th March nine proud Mount Colah Public students combined with 250 other primary school children to perform a piece, Ohne Sorgen (Without a Care), with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at a free family concert in Parramatta Park. Emma B, Maya S, Georgia B, Alice H, Olivia H, Hugh K, Thomas H, Riley H and Ethan M dedicated four lunchtimes a week to learning and perfecting a percussion accompaniment with the help of Mrs Pugh and Miss Behrens.

On concert day, the students were required to arrive early so they could practise with the orchestra. They patiently followed instructions on where to stand while the teachers and organisers arranged everyone in front of the main stage. After a long wait, it was finally time to play! Eagerly, our small percussion group picked up their instruments and took their positions for the performance. We all cheered at the top of our lungs when Channel 7 newsreader Anne Sanders announced Mount Colah Public School's name in the list of participating schools.

With great enthusiasm, the children tapped, jingled and scraped their percussion instruments in time with the orchestra behind them. The international guest conductor was so impressed he asked the students to perform an encore of the piece. This left the children buzzing with excitement and keen to sign up again next year if the opportunity is available.

Mrs Pugh and Miss Behrens would like to congratulate the children on their terrific dedication, enthusiasm and sensible behaviour throughout this experience. Well done!
