Mount Colah Public School Parent Handbook - coming soon
In the Kindergarten Classroom
Your child will focus on six key learning areas (KLA‘s).
- english
- mathematics
- science and technology
- history and geography
- personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE)
- creative arts
There is a strong focus on English and mathematics in Kindergarten classrooms to ensure your child learns foundational skills. These lessons are fun, engaging and appropriately challenging for your child. More information on these key areas will be provided at the parent information session at the start of the Kindergarten school year. Throughout the year Kindergarten students also participate in other school events such as athletics and cross-country carnivals, Harmony day, NAIDOC week, and 100 days of Kindergarten.
Year 5 Buddy Groups
Children will be introduced to a buddy group consisting of several Kindergarten and year 5 students. Buddies are a great way to help new children feel more relaxed and have other friendly faces they can recognise around the school. Buddies take their role very seriously and everyone is always very excited.
Class Formation
Children will not be assigned a class until after the school year starts. In Kindergarten all children are together for the initial period to allow for children to settle into routines and to spend time getting to know each other. There will be lots of new faces and lots of excitement. Teachers will create classes based on a few key areas:
- The medical needs of students, including any disabilities that need adjustments
- student interactions
- gender balance
- balancing learning abilities and needs.
Friendships are not the main consideration as they are not always conducive for learning in a classroom setting. Children will regroup every day to eat recess and lunch, even in term 4!
